What is a “Goshuin” stamp?
Due to its origin, a “Goshuin” stamp issued by a Buddhist temple or Shinto shrine is proof that each believer has established a link or relationship with the deity or deities by offering their own written-out sutra or actually chanting a sutra. As such, collecting “Goshuin” stamps by making a pilgrimage to temples and shrines has long been considered a religious practice to accumulate positive virtues. Presently, at many Japanese temples and shrines, visitors are allowed to receive “Goshuin” stamps by worshipping and making a monetary donation in lieu of offering a written-out sutra or chanting a sutra.

- Visit a Buddhist temple or a Shinto shrine for worship.
- Donate a set amount of money for a “Goshuin” stamp and present your “Goshuin-cho” stampbook at the temple or shrine office to request its “Goshuin” stamp.
